  • Paul Ormerod: Prisons, incentives and how to save the planet

    Updated: 2012-11-30 06:53:26
Criminals are refusing to leave Portugal’s prisons. According to the International Herald Tribune, prisoners are starting to want to serve the full amount of their sentences rather than be released on parole. This is despite the fact that there is record over-crowding and conditions inside are reported to be dire. Motoring offenders are increasingly failing to pay fines, opting instead to serve three or even six month sentences. his is a remarkable illustration of the effect of economic incentives.

Change is under way at the Bank of England. Chancellor George Osborne today announced that Mark Carney, a Canadian central banker, will be the new Governor of the Bank when he takes up his post in the early summer of 2013. Many have welcomed a decision to appoint a new Governor from outside the Bank's existing heavy-weights. Perhaps this represents a moment when the BoE will bring fresh thinking and dynamism into policy-making after several years when the institution looked in real danger of atrophy.

Will inflation caused by rising primary product prices be likely to be the key constraint on economic growth? Douglas McWilliams, Thras Moraitis and Mike McWilliams consider whether this constraint will bite at a sufficiently slow rate for the impact of the extra growth in emerging economies to mean that the West will have to grow more slowly.

  • Property rights Chinese style (2)

    Updated: 2012-11-24 06:16:01
Nearly two years ago I blogged on Property Rights Chinese style hich featured a developer demolishing the bottom six floors of an apartment block, leaving just enough of the structure so that the seventh floor (owned by someone else not wanting to sell) would not fall down. The comment was made that there was very loose controls on regulating investment (and health and safety) and this led to outcomes that would not be seen in most developed economies. Since then, government rules and controls have become more strict, and now to the point where property rights are so sacred that we again see outcomes that we don't see elsewhere!

What is the connection between the content of Boris Johnson’s speech this week to the CBI, tax avoidance and evasion, executive pay, petty crime and plagiarism by students? This is yet another one where economics can help us with the solution. Economists have long used the example of a factory which imposes costs on other people in the neighbourhood through the pollution it generates. They refer to such costs as ‘externalities’. These are costs external to the factory itself.

  • Nobel Winner address youth unemployment

    Updated: 2012-11-22 14:13:12
Youth unemployment is higher than adult unemployment even in normal economic times. In these circumstances, urgent policy action is needed to avoid long-term unemployment, which destroys talent and creates social problems.

  • Unit 4 Macro: UK to End Financial Aid to India from 2015

    Updated: 2012-11-12 05:03:00
Here are some links connected to the news that the United Kingdom is drawing to a close financial aid to India by the year 2015. The focus will shift from aid to trade. Bilateral trade between the countries in 2010 was worth £10 bn. The countries have set a target of £20 bn by 2015. We also link to a new Inside Story programme from Al Jaxzeerah on the continuing debate over the effectiveness of and future of overseas aid in the world economy.

  • Unit 2 Macro: Pinterest Board on Aggregate Demand and Supply

    Updated: 2012-11-11 21:02:36
One of my student assignments for this week is a collaboration using Pinterest. We have set up a new board covering news stories connected to aggregate demand and aggregate supply. Students have write access and will be encouraged to research relevant news and analysis stories and then pin the best of them onto the board. We will discuss many of them in a follow-up session in class - the new Pinterest app for the iPad and iPhone makes this an easy app to use both in the classroom and in independent research outside of school. To follow the (constantly evolving) Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply Pinterest board - please click here

  • Another Spanish General Strike and the Ugly Side of Austerity

    Updated: 2012-11-11 21:02:31
After hearing about the pensioner driven to suicide by the crisis in Greece along with the shocking figure of two "economic-related suicides" in Italy every day on average in 2010 (when 362 unemployed people and 336 entrepreneurs killed themselves), I remember feeling horrified that this recession had left so many people feeling this was the only way out. Now Spain is the latest of the so-called "PIGS" to be suffering this tragic turn of events.

  • Unit 1 Micro: Denmark Drops the High Fat Food Tax

    Updated: 2012-11-11 21:02:29
The Danish government has opted to bring to an end a policy intervention designed to curb consumption of high fat foods. he measure - introduced in the autumn of 2011 - added £1.50 per kilo of saturated fats in a product but the experiment will end because of fears over inflated food prices and domestic jobs being put at risk. Food manufacturers complained of increased compliance costs and there was some evidence of a rise in cross-border shopping to avoid the tax. A proposed new tax on sugar has also been cancelled. ideo: Fat tax introduced by Denmark

  • Unit 1 Micro: How Hot Dogs Are Made

    Updated: 2012-11-11 21:02:25
For many industrial products the price elasticity of supply across different levels of demand is essentially perfectly elastic - i.e. a business can manufacture as much as is needed at a given unit cost for a given level of market demand. Processed food is a good example of this and I can find no better example of the idea than this stunningly clear five minute video on how hot dogs are made!

  • Jimmy Mulville at Ent Soc - An Evening with Hat Trick Productions

    Updated: 2012-11-10 20:56:23
I am a great fan of improvisational comedy and used to love watching the hit show Whose Line Is It Anyway. Here is an excellent example of how the web application Pinterest can be used for some student collaboration. Mo Tanweer got his students to explore the news media online to find current and relevant examples of protectionism issues as part of their work on international trade. Curating the contributions creates   super resource that can be shared and used for independent reading and research. Click here to find the Pinterest site on protectionism re there other colleagues and students out there making use of Pinterest? If so please let us know and we can showcase some of your work!

  • The Great British (Economics) Bake Off!

    Updated: 2012-11-09 20:54:11
An autumnal hat tip to Nicola Morrow from Epsom College who has sent through this rather wonderful upply and demand diagram created by Jake McGrath - it is elicately constructed out of three types of breakfast cereal (Shreddies, Start and Chocolate mini max) on a bed of icing sugar. Naturally the challenge is laid down - what else can you students use to create supply and demand diagrams?

  • Poverty and savings

    Updated: 2012-11-09 20:54:09
When discussing consumer spending and household savings, I find that students frequently question why poor people tend to save less. Surely, being more concerned about their future, poor people should be saving more?

  • Chocolate Passion - Grown in St Lucia, Made in Cambridge

    Updated: 2012-11-09 20:54:08
Angus Thirwell the co-founder and CEO of Hotel Chocolat is immensely grateful to Joanne Harris and Juliet Binoche. respectively the author and star of the hit film Hotel Chocolat. The movie educated a generation of aspirational chocolate lovers in how to pronounce Hotel Chocolat and has helped millions of consumers in Britain and around the world advocate the hit chocolate retail brand without committing a pronunication faux-pas! I wonder how many satisfied customers realise that Hotel Chocolat does not exist? Perhaps they have typed the name into Trip Advisor hoping for a review of a retreat flowing with rather wonderful chocolate made from a St Lucian plantation?

  • UK Macro: UK GDP Growth in Q3 of 2012

    Updated: 2012-11-03 13:07:03
We are pleased to partner with the Office of National Statistics who have provided us with this PowerPoint presentation on the initial release of 3rd quarter GDP data for the UK which created much media interest as it took the UK out of a double drip recession. Once again the ONS have provided some really good questions that may prompt classroom discussion and their slides make for excellent handouts for teachers wanting more background on the economic cycle.  ne of the issues this time was the impact that the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee might have had on the growth figures. There is also a good chart in the powerpoint deck that looks at UK recoveries from previous recessions. You can download the resources at the bottom of this blog entry.
